Anion exchange chromatography is a form of ion exchange chromatography where a negatively charged biomolecule binds to a positively charged resin.
POROS resins for anion exchange
The Thermo Scientific POROS anion exchange (AEX) resin portfolio offers four unique chemistries. These strong and weak AEX resins possess distinctive selectivity in bind/elute as well as flow-through operation to produce high purity elution.
POROS anion exchange applications:
- Bind/elute - Capture of mAbs, proteins, virus, plasmid DNA purification; polish of viral vectors (empty vs full)
- Flow through - Trace impurity removal by binding impurities (DNA, viruses, HCP, aggregates, endotoxin)

Figure 1. POROS resin design features. High performance resins, like POROS, can simplify the development process, balance all of the requirements and help develop more efficient and cost effective purification processes.
POROS AEX resins are designed for high-dynamic binding capacity over a wide range of pH and conductivity conditions, thereby increasing process development flexibility and manufacturing throughput. The 50 μm particle size provides outstanding resolution for unprecedented impurity clearance independent of scale and flow rate.
POROS AEX resins are 50 μm, rigid, polymeric, ion‑exchange chromatography resins that can be used for the chromatography of biomolecules including recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, DNA, viruses, and peptides. The resin backbone consists of cross-linked poly[styrene divinylbenzene]. A polyhydroxyl surface coating enables nonspecific binding and different surface chemistries to provide four high-quality anion exchanger resins.
