- Safe to use in cell culture experiments—Gibco Geltrex products are free of lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDEV), making them ideal for cell culture and mouse in vivo research
- Reduce the need for lot screening—consistent protein concentration range from lot-to-lot and functional testing on each lot helps decrease variability in cell culture experiments
What is Geltrex matrix?
Geltrex matrix is a basement membrane extract that contains laminin, collagen IV, entactin, and heparin sulfate proteoglycans. It supports growth of a variety of cells in 2D and 3D cell culture, including primary cells, human embryonic stem cells, and human induced pluripotent stem cells.
Gibco Geltrex hESC-qualified Ready-To-Use Reduced Growth Factor Basement Membrane Matrix comes in a convenient, pre-diluted, ready-to-use format, which means no thawing, diluting, or premature gelling.

Gibco Geltrex Matrix is a soluble form of reduced growth factor (RGF) basement membrane extract (BME) purified from murine Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm tumor. Historically these preparations have contained the lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDEV) which does not impact the performance of the material but may be of concern in certain applications such as xenografts or other clinically focused research. Manufacturing methods are available which allow for the removal of this virus. The resulting LDEV free material is tested using PCR methods to confirm that the material is virus-free.
Reduced lot screening
Save time with reduced lot screening
Lot-to-lot differences in BME protein concentration can cause significant variability in cell culture experiments. Each lot of Geltrex matrix is tested to help ensure consistent protein concentration.
In addition, Geltrex matrix is tested for its ability to support endothelial tube formation from cryopreserved endothelial cells. Human ESC-qualified lots of Geltrex matrix have been tested for their ability to support feeder-free culture of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) with StemPro hESC SFM.
Applications for Geltrex basement membrane extract
Geltrex matrix is suitable for a broad range of applications. Geltrex matrix encourages the differentiation of human epithelial cell lines derived from mammary glands (MCF-10A) into acinar structures. In addition, it can be used for the promotion and maintenance of a differentiated phenotype in a variety of cell cultures including primary epithelial cells, endothelial cells, glandular cells, neurons, and smooth muscle cells.
Not only can Geltrex matrix be utilized in various assays including angiogenesis, neurite outgrowth, and tumor cell invasion assays, but also as a vehicle to supplement the tumorigenicity of injected tumor cells in nude mice.
