Differentiate and enumerate Cronobacter sakazakii from infant formula and other food samples with this chromogenic medium.
Differentiate and enumerate Cronobacter sakazakii from infant formula and other food samples with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Chromogenic Cronobacter Isolation Agar (Dehydrated). Chromogenic Cronobacter Isolation Agar (CCI) is an enhanced formulation of Brilliance™ Cronobacter Sakazakii Agar (DFI) with improved specificity and colony coloration for the detection of Cronobacter.
Cronobacter sakazakii is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that rarely causes disease in healthy adults. It has been implicated in outbreaks of disease in premature infants (neonates). Research suggests that neonates, or those infants who have other medical conditions, are more susceptible to this infection. Most reported cases of infection are severe, including sepsis (bacteria in the blood, meningitis, or necrotizing enterocolitis (severe intestinal infection).
Use Chromogenic Cronobacter Isolation Agar for differentiation and enumeration of Cronobacter sakazakii from infant formula and other food samples.
Cronobacter spp. have been isolated at low levels from powdered infant formulae, and the organisms’ high tolerance to desiccation provides a competitive advantage in the dry environments of milk powder factories, increasing the risk of product contamination1.
Chromogenic Cronobacter Isolation (CCI) agar is an optimisation of the original Brilliance™ Enterobacter Sakazakii Agar (DFI), developed by Iversen et al. in 20043. The concentration of the X-α-glucoside chromogen was increased to improve the blue-green colouration of Cronobacter strains with weak glucosidase activity. Sodium thiosulphate and ammonium iron (III) citrate are included to differentiate hydrogen sulphide-producing Enterobacteriaceae, which are coloured grey/brown, and sodium deoxycholate is added to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive competitors.
