With climate change having a visible impact on the world, it’s become increasingly clear that innovation is critical to creating a greener planet.
Thermo Fisher Scientific recognizes the urgency of addressing the changing climate. That's why we are committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from our operations by more than 50% by 2030* and to achieving net-zero emissions across our entire value chain by 2050.**
Our dedication to innovation helps our customers achieve their own environmental goals while reducing our footprint.
Customers like Koppert, a company that produces and sells natural alternatives to chemical pesticides, was looking for a more environmentally sustainable method to ship live, biological crop protection – one that didn’t compromise on quality and could keep its products cool while transporting them to customers.
“A lot of our customers ask, ‘Can you come up with a better sustainable solution for shipping cold products?’” said Richard Ohm, a global sustainability specialist at Thermo Fisher.
And so, Thermo Fisher Scientific developed an innovative solution in the form of the paper cooler, a fully curbside-recyclable, 100% paper-based container for shipping temperature sensitive products with minimal waste. Thermo Fisher Scientific then made the decision to share the greener solution with other like-minded companies, including Koppert.
“Our traditionally used solution ended up in a landfill,” explained Martjin van de Waarsenburg of Koppert. “It could not be recycled, so the paper cooler really reduces our footprint.”
The paper cooler gives Koppert an effective, high-quality recyclable way to transport its natural, temperature-sensitive pesticides, and helps Thermo Fisher Scientific deliver on their Mission to enable customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.
One of Koppert’s customers, Florensis, a horticultural business with sustainability at its core, regularly receives products from Koppert in the paper cooler and is one of the many companies that has benefitted from this environmentally sustainable solution.
The paper cooler has been a seamless integration into Florensis’ already existing recycling efforts. “Everyone can see that the world is changing,” said Geert Verburg from Florensis. “The climate is changing, and that the seasons are changing. I think it’s beautiful that the paper cooler can be recycled in the normal paper recycling and not separately.”
Turning things around for the planet not only takes time – it takes innovation,
The paper cooler is just one example of Thermo Fisher Scientific's efforts to reduce climate change and waste and displays our commitment to helping create a more sustainable future for us all.
“We have a holistic view on sustainability,” Ohm said. “It will take innovation to create a more sustainable world. We think together, we can make a change.”
