Calretinin is encoded by the CALB2 gene located on chromosome 16. It is a troponin C superfamily protein having six EF-hand structural motifs. The EF motif allows the protein to bind calcium, and function in calcium signaling, calcium buffering, and modulating neuronal excitability. Calretinin is expressed in the mesothelium, mast cells, some neural cells, hair follicles, and fat cells.
